A Poetic Life
A poetic writing and creative living workshop series, for women.
Commencing June 26th.
Waking up early and noticing the scent of seasonal change in the air. A hot herbal bath in the dead of winter. A tablespoon of whipped cardamom cream in strong coffee. The smell of the rain. A moment you know will become a memory.
Poetry is not an outdated, stuffy literary form, it is a lens through which to see the world. A way of living. A powerful, nutritive source. Poetry teaches us to pay attention. Poetry teaches us seasonality, sensuality and subtlety. The magic of in between spaces. The words unsaid. Poetry teaches us to hold life, and ourselves, with extreme tenderness and care.
Maybe you’ve always loved to write, but were told by teachers your narrative lacked form, your punctuation was wrong. Poetry doesn’t care about any of that. In a world of AI, rage-bait, short form and content farms: poetic writing is a balm for us all. Poetry is an ancient art form, a healing practice, the felt space between words and worlds.
If you desire to write, but feel like you’re not good enough, or doing it wrong, poetic writing is a place to break free. If you want to live in more attentive, connected life, poetic writing will teach you how. In a world devoid of romance and beauty, where grayscale and conformity rule the world, poetic writing brings us back to a time where beauty was quite literally etched into the mundane.
In A Poetic Life, we explore the creative process, our connection with the natural world, the connection we have with ourselves, our inner realm and our vitality through attention, reading, note-taking, discussing, writing and, when the time is right, sharing our written work.
Poetic writing is a salve for the writers, and readers of our time. Anyone who is called to this course is welcome to join. You do not have to consider yourself a writer. You do not need to enjoy poetry (as you know it, now).
We will begin this journey at a heightened time, beginning just after the solstice, as the peak of season is felt and begins to alchemise into the next. We meet every Thursday on Zoom, alternating between the time of 10am and 6pm AEST.
Poetry is
A Poetic Life
A Poetic Life is a workshop series for weaving poetic living and writing into the everyday. We meet five times over two months. Each workshop serves as a chapter, telling a story in herself, and will last approximately two hours in length, including time for communal storytelling and discussion.
Every chapter is accompanied by suggested reading list, rituals and writing exercises, leaving you with a rich resource pool to dive back into at anytime. You are welcome to join the course live, or tune into the recordings in your own time.
Please note: this workshop series will not focus directly on how to write for business or social media platforms. However, I do believe it will be extremely beneficial for those who wish to grow their business / share their art via the written word.
Chapter One: The River
We start at the bank of The River. The River is the creative process. The movement of ideas, art and language through our veins. The River is the whole cycle: the starting point, the journey, the waterfall. Here, we learn to trust the current, no matter it’s pace. In the River, we look at all the ways you are afraid to fail, believe you’re not enough to live a creative life. We remove debris blocking the flow. We nurture the river, our creative life, with extreme reverence, the same way you would any living being, wellness or work pursuit.
In The River we explore nourishing the creative life from women who run with the wolves and the myth of la llorona. We consider the lifeline of writing and the creative process, starting, finishing and starting again.
Chapter Two: Poetry Comes From The Moon
The art of non-cringey poetry. This is not just about poetry itself, but poetic writing in general. Poetic writing is powerful because it trusts the reader. It leaves space for the other to bridge the gap. Here, you become an archivist of your existence. Collect words and ideas for your writing from the world around you. From nature, life, art, your experiences and form it into written pieces for yourself, or to share with the world.
We chapter two, we explore the connection between poetry and nature. In particular, the moon. We bathe in traditional Japanese poetry and it’s connection with the seasons and the land. Through poetic attention, we deepen our relationship with the natural world, the dance of nature and our rhythmic, cyclical bodies, too.
Chapter Four: The Art of Attention
The healing of poetic writing is how teaches us presence and embodied gratitude. Here, we explore and practice the art of attention, of noticing, of catching the tiniest glimmer in the darkest night and weaving that moment into a story, a poem, a teaching or a song.
This is a chapter on the art and process of poetic writing itself. From taking the seed of inspiration or memory and weaving it into a living, breathing finished piece. Creating a patchwork of memories. A body of work. A deeper relationship with yourself and this moment in time.
Chapter Five: Sharing Circle
In this chapter, we sit as if beside a fire surrounded by trees, music and flowers. This is opportunity to share your written words out loud to the group. This is not compulsory, but recommended, and deeply powerful. Depending on the size of the group and timezones, we may have two seperate sharing circles. This will be decided once the series is underway.
Chapter Three: The Wellspring. Poetry As A Women’s Practice
A Woman’s health and vitality is directly linked to creativity. This is not just about making art in the obvious or traditional sense (although of course that is important, too) but also the act of living creatively day to day. If you’ve ever done all the right things in terms of health and wellness, but then wondered why you still feel exhausted, you can rest your bones here.
In Chapter Three, we consider the written word and creative life as a Wellspring, writing our own personal myths, exploring desire, beauty, love, passion and creativity as an essential part of the everyday, and essential fuel for life.
